Dota 2 Asian Championships – Day 1 Recap

Dota 2 Asian Championship

The first day of what promises to be one of the most prestigious tournaments of the year has concluded. After 27 games, the Western teams Evil Geniuses and Team Secret top the standings. But the tournament is still far from over, and with the massive amounts of games that are to be played during the group stage, teams still have four days to mend whatever damage any first day jitters may have caused. For some, though, the situation is more dire than for others.

The tournament will continue tomorrow at noon, local time. But how much sleep will the teams be able to get while still being able to prepare for their upcoming matches?

Day 1 Results

The standings paint a rather accurate picture of how the tournament has been so far, with both EG and Team Secret dominating the tournament. EG is perhaps the biggest surprise of the tournament; after coming off what can only be described as a poor performance in the D2L finals, the boys in blue have bounced back.

On the other end of the spectrum we have Newbee, the reigning champions of the International. They have had a rough start to DAC and emerge from the first day with a disappointing 1-3 record, leaving them stranded near the bottom of the standings. Something will have to change for Hao and his teammates if they are to even make it out of the group stage.

Top Pick/Ban-rates
93%

Despite the four above heroes being picked and banned in almost every game, it seems like we are going to avoid a TI-esque meta where relatively small pool of heroes was being picked. In DAC’s first day alone, 77 of the 109 heroes currently in the pool have been picked or banned at least once. Interestingly, Vengeful Spirit still seems to be the first choice of support for all teams.

While Axe continues his streak of being a high impact hero in pro-games, the interesting part here is the remaining three heroes. Batrider, Morphling, and Templar Assassin have all been in the fridge during the months leading up to DAC, but have proven to be extremely successful. Batrider was picked exclusively by Chinese teams and with a win-loss record of 7-1 we can probably expect to see him more as the tournament progresses. The same can be said for Morphling who was picked twice by Invictus Gaming and Big God, while the two losses with the hero were from CDEC and LGD. Templar Assassin, on the other hand, seems to be the flavor Korea brought to the tournament, carrying MVP Phoenix and Rave to victory.

Recommended games

Even though the tournament has gotten a lot of attention and hype, most games on the first day have been rather one-sided. As such we will only recommend one game for now, although this almost certainly will change over the next few days!
