5 Types Of Dota 2 Players

Whether you like it or not, Dota 2 is a gigantic entity of a game. With millions of active users and a massive eSports presence, it’s one of gaming’s most influential and important offerings. But the thing that always holds Dota 2 back from being one of the best games out there is its community. Because of the rather hateful and quite frankly repugnant community, it’s also one of the worst games to get into. If you’re a noob, you will suffer. If you’re a veteran, you will dominate. The middle ground isn’t always immediately apparent. Even with all of this said, Dota 2 still has a rather diverse community behind the vocal minority and petty fights and I think this should be celebrated. Without further ado, let’s look at a few of the types of people you might find in this three lane world.

The Noob

Even the most experienced Dota player can’t claim that they weren’t a noob at some point. Dota is an incredibly diverse game to the point where it’s nearly overwhelming. When I first started playing it, I didn’t have a clue where to start or what to make of all of these things that were presented to me. With a huge roster of heroes, a multitude of items and different strategies for everything, this is one tough game to get into.

The noob can sometimes be easily spotted. Most of the time by being the victim of first blood in the first minute of the game or having no clue what a tower is capable of. They might violently run around the whole map with no purpose or strategy and just spam whatever ability they managed to unlock. Or they might just buy a whole inventory load of Iron Branches. Being a noob in Dota is tough because you hold back the game for your team whether you know it or not. The game is largely focused on teamwork and if one team member isn’t pulling their weight then it snowballs into an ultimate defeat.

The Overachiever

These are the veteran guys. Dota is largely a game that you can master by just memorizing it. If you know how to counter specific heroes or know which build is best, you can dominate in a game. These guys know all there is to know about everything and because of that, they will whoop your ass. Easily spotted on the battlefield because they will be 30 kills strong in midgame and requires the whole team to take down. Sometimes these guys can be a nuisance because the game can be fairly balanced in terms of skill level, but one hero will just wreck everything in their way.

They surely deserve respect for being so good at something, though. Even if they make playing the game so much harder for new players.

The Chatterbox

You can easily spot one of these if the center of your screen is constantly lit up from the chat. Communication can sometimes be key in Dota, but these guys can take it a bit far. They will sit in chat and comment on literally everything that’s going on in the game. Making remarks about people’s builds and spamming the alert button or every creep that touches a tower. Line after line of “X champ is OP” and “Cover me while I stand by the fountain” and so on.

Then you get the guys that sit on voice chat and have talk about things that are entirely irrelevant to the game. Maybe their Skype is broken or there is a “love at first sight” moment. In one game I played there was a guy that constantly talked about some YouTube videos he watched and it had absolutely nothing to do with what was happening in the game. Maybe Dota is their social outlet or something.

The Douchebag

Oh you knew this one was coming. Dota douchebags are probably one of the worst types of gamers around. It’s understandable when you cuss out the enemy team for owning you because that’s a normal response, but when you start attacking your own teammates because they don’t play exactly like you want them to, then you reach a new level of asshole. Rather be constructive in your doucheness and don’t just blindly call someone a faggot because they didn’t buy perfect items.

I don’t exactly know what made these people so vile in the first place. Maybe it’s the extended exposure to the game that has made them so resentful. If I see a decently performing player, I’m weary of them because most of the time they are dickmagnets. It’s just a game in the end so stop being so hateful towards your fellow man for two seconds.

The Plays The Game Because It’s Fun Person

Dota 2 is still just a game. It’s a very deep and complex game, but a game nonetheless. You don’t have to behave like a bellend or be so serious. You’re probably not going to be a professional at it, so why try and make it more than it should be. These players just play the game because it’s fun. They might not get GODLIKEs every match or know how to counter every hero, but they simply enjoy the experience. I’m in this camp myself because I don’t play Dota to get good or have amazing stats, but rather just for laughs and good times.

Some people like the challenge and getting good at something, but I feel the enjoyment is often lost when you do something like that. If you can be good and still enjoy the game then you have won it, in my eyes.

Conclusion

These are only a few types of Dota players that I have observed in my short playtime of it (because 30 hours is considered “short” in this game) so enlighten me on some different types you might have seen if you’ve played it enough. If you haven’t played Dota 2 yet, then consider doing so. Tough out the initial stages of the game and it can potentially be a good time.
