Toxicity

I have been playing DotA since the early days of yore, before Terrorblade ever walked the plains. Twelve years ago was a peaceful time in the WC3 client, where wins were less important than good games. If two players left a team, someone from the advantaged team would simply hop on over and play on the other side. Would this make sense now? No. A ranked system can’t allow it.

However, what I am trying to convey is simply a sense that the game has changed. The most important is simply the mindset of the player. In DotA, infinite flaming from the start of the game is not unusual, it is simply expectation. Are you playing that character? Did you die that one time? Of course, playing for ten years has helped me to play the game in what I consider to be a competant manner. However, any action, even if the appropriate one, is a good reason to be intensely toxic. Games in DotA are truly the playground of Venomancer.

I feel as though part of this problem is that it’s not even considered an issue. As a counterexample, in League, players will ignore or rally against a player who is being toxic in chat. It’s simply not considered an okay thing to do. In DotA, not only is it okay, but players are more than happy to hop on the bus, piling blame on one player, when I see five at the start of every game. I played today after a break to make some replays for a friend, but after a reminder of the community, I’ll be telling him not to start playing. Can you imagine the hate given to a new player in this game? A new one? It must be so intense that most choose to stop playing on their own.

Needless to say, I feel compelled to leave DotA behind. It was a love affair of many years, but like a bad spouse, she’s gotta go.

Newsflash: DotA and Dota 2 aren’t the same game. DotA was driven by the community (more or less), while Dota 2 is driven by money. This wouldn’t be that much of a proplem if Valve would listen/communicate, but they don’t give a fuck. Sad but true.

in publics back in d1 days you would not meet someone in a second game ever again so winning/losing did not really matter. You were playing for a “gg”. Since the introduction of bots that save stats everyone was playing for them. Dota is competitive by its nature and this is how its supposed to be played. D2 took it a step ahead with ratings/rankinks and many more stuff which is fine by me. If you are up to it, stay on board. If you cant handle it, consider start playing a single-player game.

In fact a new player would land in the proper “hidden” MMR range after a few games, somewhere below 1k RMM. So claiming that toxicity scares away new players is pulled out of the fingers and is mostly done to just over-dramatize things. If a new player is in the proper MMR with other sub 1k players, I highly doubt they flame each other, since everyone of them sucks and has no game knowledge.

When I play, ppl usually dont flame someone for 1 stupid mistake (range above 3.8k). It needs to be a series of retarded feeding and other stuff in order for ppl to start flaming that one person hardcore. If you messed up an ult like Lichs ult or Tides in an important team fight, ok it happens, you might get a remark, but everyone moves on. If you mess up the ult several times, dont ward properly, get caught out several times and feed like the bigest noob etc.- you deserve every bit of flame coming towards you. Its the only tool the community has to let players who have zero talent for playing moba games know that they suck and should rather play a different game. Yes everyone might have a bad day, but it cant be so bad that some ppl play literally like reatards. And if that person was a smart person it would avoid playing on a really bad day. Because you know youre gonna suck and get flamed. That simple. Why would you keep playing on a really bad day and ruin 9 other ppls games? If youre that selfish and still chose to play and potentially ruin games for 9 other players in every single game, be ready to get that toxicity in your face that you well deserve..

The actual thing is that some casual ppl just dont have the basic intelligence and micro skills that are required for a game like that. And if after 2k+ games someone has a winrate of like 49% or lower and is still under 3.4k MMR, this is when you know you should stop playing this game period or at least ranked. Because youre just a burden to players who understand the game and are trying to raise mmr.

OP sounds like that typical guy who fucks up the game by doing a couple mistakes over and over again, then gets flamed and then starts to write in All Chat “report xyz, he is flaming all game” like a freaking emo sissy.. He then proceeds to tell everyone in All Chat what he got called by his teammates and basically acts like a butthurt Emo, thus squeling to the enemy team how his feelings got hurt, so he seeks for “reporting help” from the enemy team. whereas the enemy team probably also realizes that this person fucked up the game and doesnt give 2 flying craps about his emoing.

This argumentation with “new players get turned off by toxicity and stop playing the game” is usually used by casual losers who suck so badly that they get flamed alot and thus have a bad experience through that. But they happen to ignore the fact, that due to sucking in the game and failing to learn stuff and beeing an ignorant morron and never listening to tipps from teammates, they give “bad experience” to at least 4 other players in the game.

If youre a player who plays well or halfways decent, you should not have problems with getting flamed, period. Period! I can tell that by experience. If youre a morron, who thinks he has uber skill and goes for carry Lina and other nonsensical bullcrap like retarded item builds on heroes etc., thats when you have issues with flaming and thats when you also should. So the “system” works correctly Id say. Ppl give game ruiners a hard time, exactly like it should be.
