How to rank up in DotA 2? The Ultimate Gu > by lizzlie October 14, 2018 March 19, 2019 0 8470

Dota 2 new ranked system calibration is going to happen soon, now or later your rank will be reset and everyone is going to play another 20 matches (10 solo/10 party) for a brand new rank badge to shine. Dota 2 Ranked Season 3 is starting soon, so how to rank up in DotA 2 and stay off the toxic games?

Read this guide as I am going to teach you how to improve your overall ranking.

Understanding the Dota 2 Seasonal Ranking System

First thing first, the brand new Dota 2 Seasonal Ranking System represents the level of skill set the player achieves in a single season. Each play has to play ten solo and/or ten party matches for a certain badge to appear on his profile.

There are 8 available badges that a player can achieve in Dota 2 ranked season 3:

    Herald (

0-640 MMR)
Guardian (

800-1440 MMR)
Crusader (

1600-2240 MMR)
Archon (

2400-3400 MMR)
Legend (

3200-3840 MMR)
Ancient (

4000-4640 MMR)
Divine (

4800-5440 MMR)

  • Immortal – Leaderboard medals for players who make it onto the regional Leaderboards will earn Immortal medals, with their rank displayed beneath the medal. All Immortal medals have a sparkling particle effect in-game. Different for Top 1000, Top 100, Top 10 and Top 1.
  • Calculations of MMR are rough estimates based on community observations. Valve is keeping the exact calculation for the earning of the medals a secret, and it might change over time.

How to rank up in DotA 2 ?

Picking the right DotA 2 heroes

Never jump into first picking your favorite hero if you want to grind your ranking. Always concentrate on counter picking. That way you are taking away the chances for winning from the starting of the game. If you counter-pick their core positions with your pick well enough, you can “solo win” the entire game (nobody can solo win, but you can make sufficient difference).

Play support, supports win games. Some of the supports in the current meta can be picked first without even thinking what your opponents want to play, especially after a large number of games with the certain hero. Laning phase depends on the supports, same as the map vision, safe lane farm, rotation on the map, hard lane survivability, every thing of above depends strongly on the supports, shortly – the whole game. Never be picky with the roles you play, playing support will give you enormous knowledge what you miss when you play the other 3 roles.

Dota 2 Beginners should always concentrate to the “easier” heroes to play. Never rush into playing Meepo or Invoker, Chen or Visage if you are not familiar enough with the game mechanics. This kind of approach can ruin the game for the player, as well as for the team. Pick right-click based heroes for the start and focus on learning the dota 2 game mechanics.

Play DotA 2 Offline with bots

As we said above, always start with the easier heroes, but when it’s time to move forward and get the thing rolling, test your skills with bots. Always play a game or two with bots before playing ranked game with some hero that you pick first time.

Playing with bots give lots of advantages as it will help you become a better player beside the everyday struggle to rank up without getting any better.

    Try different in-game strategies

When you see that your average pick doesn’t work out, try to outsmart the ranking badge Valve gave you, and you deserve better, everyone does. Try to be smarter than your rank tells you you are.

There are games when mostly farming through the game would be the best for your team, like when you play safe lane carry that will most likely win late-game. But this doesn’t mean that every time when you pick carry you should “afk farm” and ruin the game for the team.

Try different stuff, you win some, you lose some, everyone does.

    Team play

Defence of the Ancients is not a single-player game. It is online multiplayer and that means something. You, as well as four other players are on the same team. Winning is everyone’s goal and that should be clear for everyone.

Of course you will be calibrated with players that you wouldn’t want to be sometimes. Dota 2 community is in fact with a big percentage nuts, there are feeders, flamers and every kind of rude players. When you spot someone like that, just ignore it, don’t try to be smart, do not argue with them, just ignore it. I wouldn’t extend this any further, ignore them.

Do what your team needs to be done. Playing along with good communication between the team, the game always gives positive outcome.

    Never give up!

Every single Dota 2 player is using too much time playing the game. Not only on free time, we play on weekends, on Mondays, Tuesdays… Fridays basically, we play every time we have a chance.

Time is precious, and nobody would like to lose a hour just to see his Ancient crushing non skipable sight at the end of the game. That’s why you should never give up.

There is always some chance to get back at the flow and win the game, play it to the very end. And if nothing, at least use the remaining time to practice your skills and look back what and where did you did wrong. Do not repeat your mistakes.

Watch Dota 2 replays and videos

There are plenty of videos on Youtube that you can watch, online streaming 24/7 and every tournament replay is available on a click. Use that information to become a better player.

Watch your own replays and find your mistakes, make sure that you don’t repeat them often in the future. Learn from your mistakes and they will become rare as you advance into the next rankings. Watch your wins and find what you did good, repeat those actions, learn from them and have that in mind in your next game of Dota 2.
