The Big Brawl of the TI8 SEA Closed Qualifiers

The Southeast Asia regional qualifier for The International 2018 starts tomorrow, June 22. Fnatic and TNC Predator are the frontrunners, the ones expected to claim the two available spots, however, their competition is rather interesting, tough even, and there are a few storylines to be told about who are some of the teams fighting against the top two dogs.

TNC Tiger are the winners of the first open qualifier leg and, as the name suggests, they are the sister team of TNC Predator. Their captain is none other than Theeban “1437” Siva, the man who was TNC’s main team captain at TI7. Theeban joined the Filipino squad in May 2017 and as soon as he took the commanding role, TNC surprised a couple of big names. Arrived at the team just three days before StarLadder i-League Invitational Season 2 started and almost on the same day with a new patch, 1437 put Jakiro back into meta and secured a second place finish in Shanghai, at his very first tournament with TNC. TI7 didn’t go too well, TNC finished 9-12th, but the end of the year came with another big victory in China when TNC took the China Top trophy home. The last tournament for 1437 with TNC main team was MDL Macau where TNC took second place once more.

At the beginning of 2018 the team decided they wanted to revert to a full Filipino roster and dropped 1437. However, Theeban’s time in the SEA region was not over. The organization had a new plan in mind and in March this year they announced TNC Tiger, a secondary squad of theirs where the Canadian was appointed captain.

Among the players who will fight under the TNC Tiger tag in the TI8 regional qualifiers are Muhammad “InYourdreaM” Rizky, a flashy pub star mid laner who was introduced to the big scene by Fnatic. InYourdreaM was signed a few days ahead of the ESL One Genting 2017, but was forced to drop from the roster due to “urgent family issues/” Since then he hasn’t been approached by any other top team in SEA. He played for various teams in the region, the most known one being BOOM ID. In an interview with Mineski. net, ahead of TI7, the Indonesian mid-laner said he‘d be rooting for TNC at the annual Valve event as he finds Theeban’s draft refreshing. A year later, InYourDream is on the same team with 1437 and is looking to prove himself once again. He has his small rivalry with Fnatic and a bigger one with BOOM ID who are also in the SEA regional qualifiers for TI8.

Tiger’s line-up features more than one player who once used to play for Fnatic. Lee “kYxY” Kong Yang, now offlaner in the newly formed squad, carried Fnatic at TI5 and a few tournaments prior to that. kYxY might not sound familiar to the ones who have started following Dota just recently. So, what you need to know about him is that this is one of the veterans of the SEA scene. Together with Mushi and Ohaiyo, kYxY was part of the Orange Esports who took 3rd place at TI3. At TI4 he was in team Titan and he is one of the founding members of Team Malaysia, which got signed by Fnatic ahead of TI5. None of his former Team Malaysia/Fnatic teammates remained with the organization, and while Mushi is already qualified for TI8 with Mineski, the other emblematic former Fnatic player, Ohaiyo is back and he is looking for revenge.

Battle Arena Elites debuted their roster in the TI8 open qualifiers. The big name here is Khoo “Ohaiyo” Chong Xin, kicked from Fnatic this year after a celebration pizza party held as the squad qualified for a Dota Pro Circuit Major tournament, ESL One Katowice. After Ohaiyo was released from the Fnatic roster, the pizza party meme became viral and at times overused in the Dota 2 community. Ohaiyo was kicked in January and in the last official shuffle, from February, he was welcomed to LGD Forever young.

Unfortunately, China was not the region for him and as he had troubles adapting, the team dropped him a month later and since then he’s been on the hunt for a new home. He found one at Ng “YamateH” Wei Poong’s team. Just ahead of the open qualifiers, the five guys were signed by Battle Arena Malaysia, one of the biggest SEA esports facilities.

Battle Arena Malaysia is Southeast Asia’s biggest esports resort. The venue, located at Jaya Shopping Centre, Petaling Jaya, boasts an area of 17,000 square feet and 110 high-end PCs for customers. “Battle Arena’s mission has always been to provide a supportive environment where aspiring gamers can hone their skills and also kick start a fruitful career in esports, therefore, having our very own gaming teams has always been a plan in the pipeline” said Irwin Chan, Head of Business Development at Battle Arena Malaysia at the official launch of their Dota 2 team.

With YamateH in the captain role, a true legend of SEA scene who has been around since 2006-207 DotA days, and Chan “WinteR” Litt-Binn in the coaching seat, the team is looking to deliver the big upsets. Their roster is a mix of three veterans with two youngsters in the core positions. Their mid-laner is Hiew “AlaCrity” Teck while the carry is Chong “ciaoba” Wei Lun, both scouted by YamateH based on their high MMR. AlaCrity, without being the first SEA player to reach 9k MMR, he is however the first Malaysian to do so. Prior to join Battle Arena Elites, he’s been with Mineski-X and Fire Dragoon. The Malaysian stack looks pretty interesting and if they have a couple of good days, they might create some problems in the SEA qualifiers, but the squad that’s by far the most intriguing in these qualifiers is, in fact, one that has just one SEA representative.

Entity Gaming is located in India. Dota 2 ti5 sea qualifiers in english They formed towards the end of 2016 when two Indian teams merged, but since then, the full Indian line-up idea was dropped in favor of an international one. Today’s Entity Gaming roster features two Danish players, which happens to be brothers, a Slovenian, a German and a Filipino. The two Danes are Mikki Mørch “HesteJoe-Rotten” Junget and Danny “Noia” Junget, former teammates of Team Secret’s carry, Ace. Noia and HesteJoe-Rotten played with Ace for nearly three years. Together they were the Danish Bears, Imperial and Cloud 9. Ace was recruited by Secret in September last year and the two brothers decided to change the continent completely, moving to Entity Gaming in January 2018. The team went through a couple of shuffles, which threw them in the open qualifiers for TI8.

Their latest addition is the DotA veteran Dominik “Black^” Reitmeier, very recently seen by the Dota 2 fans at the Supermajor panel desk. Black carried Entity from opens to closed regional qualifiers and it will be a story to remember if the team upsets the whole region to make it to TI this year.

The Southeast Asia qualifiers will kick off on the 22nd of June at 11:00 SGT/05:00 CEST with the group stage. A total of eight teams will battle head to head in a BO1 round robin with the top four making into the playoffs.
