Supervirus: The game changing bugs of Dota 2

With over a hundred different heroes all with unique arrays of spells, all with individual interactions with one another, we reach the realm of thousands upon thousands of programmed interactions. Combine these with items, game mechanics like runes, gold sources and Roshan, we have ourselves a seemingly endless list of interactions.

When Dota 2 updates every couple of months, or for a period of time, very frequently for balance patches, it was no surprise that some interactions fell off the radar. Over the years, Dota 2 has surmounted a plethora of hilarious and game-breaking bugs.

You couldn’t invoke this amount of damage

We begin our journey down the bug infested memory lane with a stop at the Morphling express. A bug in recent memory that had Invoker and Morphling’s pick rates rapidly increasing for a very brief amount of time saw the watery carry hitting for 15 thousand damage a pop. Taking advantage of a strange Morph interaction with Exort balls as Morphling returns to his natural form gave Morphling an ever increasing number of Exort buffs.

All your Roshan are belong to us

We’ve seen people release the kraken, building up wave after wave of creeps by blocking the route to the enemy’s ancient with multiple Helm of the Dominators. Few can survive the army built up without the right amount of AOE. However, what about the true kraken? The river dweller himself, Roshan.

It’s not quite stacking multiple units and sending them at the opponent’s throne, but how about recruiting your very own Viserion? Few heroes can kill Roshan at level 1, and fewer can defend a tower-agro-immune Roshan with 5 heroes right behind him. If a win in 10 minutes was what you wanted, a win in 10 minutes was what you got.

Clock. where’s rosh?

So what if you wanted to stop Roshan from being a problem in your game? If you had any concerns that your opposition might try and turn a game with a cheeky aegis and cheese collection, why not just hide the big man? One iteration of the many different versions of hiding Roshan, saw heroes like Clockwerk and Tusk shoving the giver of life through various routes to prevent him from pathing back to his natural habitat.

One iteration of this somewhat commonly reoccurring bug saw players cutting down specific trees, pulling Roshan into a certain area, redirecting his route home and having the trees grow back on top of him, permanently blocking the route home. This bug resurfaced a number of times as the location of the Roshan pit moved around frequently over a specific period of time.

What if your ancient. was in your fountain?

Alright, so how about those games where you play incredibly, but your team lets you down? Don’t you just wish you could hide your whole ancient? Well, you used to be able to. Swapping the place of the ancient and the fountain was a tactic involving a Faceless Void disconnecting and reconnecting after using chronosphere.

Although not necessarily the most effective tactic; a winning team can certainly find their way around the fountain agro with relative ease, and spawn camping was made even easier.

Money money money

Duplicating items is a common bug in basically any game with an inventory. Minecraft, Oblivion, Skyrim are all auto-fill suggestions from Google when you search “duplicate items”, and Dota wasn’t always exempt from the list.

Duplicating wards and sending them over to your carry can give you an endless supply of gold – but be prepared to buy the right items, or you won’t be able to end the game as early as you want it to. The bug was fixed within a day of being discovered, with many, many players annoyed at the MMR lost and the games ruined.
