Dota 2 fails to start

I had to reinstall Steam and Dota 2 after Avast wrongly flagged the downloading client. dll as a trojan. Unfortunately, Dota 2 doesn’t start at all. I also noticed that there is no “cfg” folder in steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota. Dota 2 fails 75th There are no dota dumps in the dumps folder.

The – autoconfig and – safe options also dont work. The “cfg” folder is still missing.

Everything was working perfectly fine yesterday.

Specs: Core i5-3450 3.10GHz
16GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT

Avast is one of the top AVs that have false positives. I would switch to Avira. Dota 2 fails 75th

You still have to provide some technical informations:

Thank you for the reply. It’s a company-managed desktop. I don’t have a choice about the anti-virus.

The interesting thing is that everything was working perfectly yesterday. I am guessing that for some reason the game is unable to populate the cfg\config. cfg entries and that’s why it’s crapping out.

LOL. You were not supposed to play Dota 2 on that system, the fact that it worked before it was because of the system administrator not enforcing the rules.
Maybe they expect some results from you other than Dota 2 mmr?
This wont be fixable since you don’t have full access to the PC and at any time settings can be overridden by the sys op.

Attached my technical information:

BTW, there’s an issue in the script in copying the list_my_programs. txt from temp to Desktop. The file created on Desktop is empty. I had to grab it from temp. (Running on Windows 8.1 x64).

Also, since I write Windows drivers for a living, I have full access to the machine (except the anti-virus). . And Dota 2 is my approved way of “de-stressing” over my lunch break.

Was expected the script won’t run ok. Missing dxdiag data (you can get that manually).
But it will be very hard to diagnose your issue since it’s a work PC, with a shitload of developing tools. Come to think about it, why don’t you try launching Dota 2 by using the VS debugger?
And back at directx. What version are you running? Is it retail or debug? Try using directx cpl and switch to retail if available. Also, are you aware of Windows 8 limitation regarding developing for old directx versions in the sense that you need at least a checked os build?

Anyway, make sure you have all the necessary permissions for the Steam and SteamApps folders (change ownership to your regular account) and that both folders are added to the ignore list on that piece of crap Avast. If that won’t work, try reinstalling Steam and Dota 2 to a root folder (like D:\Steam or C:\Steam).

Since I am not doing any DirectX work, pretty sure I have the retail version. (I write file system drivers, not graphics drivers.) Steam and Dota are installed in E:\Steam.

Like I mentioned earlier, it was working perfectly fine yesterday. Just a reinstall of Steam and Dota 2 has caused something to not initialize correctly. I suspect that since I had an earlier version installed and kept updating on top of it, Dota was working until yesterday.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out. I kind of guessed that going through the list of programs would be a pain.

Ha ha ha! I fixed it myself. Thanks for the suggestions about running with VS. I ran it with Procmon and saw where it failed. It was trying to get details about the graphics card and then died. I ran dota2 with the “-nod3d9ex” option. This worked!! After that, I was able to run it even without that option.

So thank you for the suggestions.

Glad you did it! After-all, you are a driver developer, you have the technical background and the tools already installed to debug stuff like this
That’s why I stressed you about directx and dxdiag. My script failed to get it’s output, coupled with the multiple directx sdk versions pointed at a problem with gpu/driver/directx detection.
I was just about to recommend you to switch to single-display mode in windows, then re-run dxsetup from E:\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\_CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010\ and delete video. txt from E:\Steam\steamapps\common\dota 2 beta\dota\cfg\
In case it happens again, deleting video. txt is how you force hardware re-detection in Dota 2.

Hi I have the same problem and do not know much about this, I wanted to know if I can take the step by step how to fix it thanks .
