LoL -> DotA 2 Transition

Never touched DotA, have played a few games of HoN.

Since I really am looking forward to DotA 2, what would you guys suggest I do in the meantime to try and catch up a little to the people that have been playing for years? I don’t expect to be amazing at this game, just trying not to be a complete scrub when it finally comes out. Will catch some of the tourney games this week.

I do have a HoN account. Would playing that more be a good start? Any HoN champs that will have their DotA 2 counter-part at launch that I could try to learn?

Any good DotA resources with relevant info for 2?

I’m sure a lot of people coming from LoL would appreciate this so thanks for any info.

It’s a 1:1 translation from Dota. Dota 2 canada cup liquipedia lol

Obviously the most accurate translation is from Dota1, but the game is quite dated and hard to play for someone used to the interfaces of lol/hon (which dota2 seems closer to, despite being the same game mechanically).

Dota is very good and fun if you don’t play public games though, used to love dota-league, not sure how active it is nowadays though.

-get use to not having a free blink (that ruins the game)
-get use to not having free tp’s (could be free chicken not sure) that ruins the game
-learn to deny (it’s fucking SILLY not being able to)
-get use to slightly less cartoonish game play
-be able to take criticism

Either works as preparation for DotA2 though.

From watching Dota 2 being played it seems to be exactly the same but have better graphics. So 😀

I will look into DotA though.

Hehe, I totally agree about the free blink. I’ve pretty much always used it although I never really thought it made sense.
No TP will be hard to get used to.
I think I’ll enjoy what denying brings to the game. It might sound dumb but I really like the early game last-hitting phase of LoL so throwing in denying should make it even more interesting and fun.
Criticism is always welcome if it’s meant to be helpful. Hopefully the community isn’t too rough.

What the hell does that even mean? Sounds like a random jab at LoL.

rofl you must be a lol player to think that lol=dota skill wise

It’s actually pretty damn different, especially the laning phase. Missing mid picking up a haste or invis rune will cost you your life, lanes are 100% more dangerous as you in can actually die even with wards and don’t just lol and flash away, there’s a lot more decision making in knowing when to use your tp scrolls to help your allies rather than just watching the dragon fight from top cause you can’t get there in time, towers won’t rape you if you just look at it the wrong way – you will get ganked from behind your tower pretty often (did I mention lanes are more dangerous?)

Also, melee carries are actually viable, once you get used to the more punishing laning phase it’s smooth sailing.

That’s the best one line summary you’re likely to get. You’ll have a general idea of what to do from LoL but DotA is way less forgiving.

They are quite similiar in terms of skills. Main differences iare I see is between the games are:

LoL-no denying, which means you won’t fall far behind if you are bad at last hitting. When I pubstomp in hon/dota, I can get 2 levels ahead of my opponent just by denying

LoL-no real carry
in dota at least in pub games there are heroes that can literally 1 vs a whole team. In LoL, carries are toned down

Int/Ap-they are kind of direct correlation(spell caster). In LoL, ap is strong late game. However in dota, Int heroes are strong early game but gets weaker as game progress most int heroes become support for their carry(through sheepsticks/flying stick)

Disables hit a lot harder in dota. Dota 2 canada cup liquipedia lol In League, there are disables but they are quite weak in comparison. Most stuns like like 1.5 sec. Ashes stun is like 3 sec at max distance. Dota/Hon stuns come easier some heroes have stuns for like 2 sec. Some heroes can literally chain stun(earthshaker)

Overall. Main skills of the game remains the same. You have be smart to not get in stupid fights, buy wards, set up good ganks. A good League player can easily become a good dota player and vice versa. Dota 2 canada cup liquipedia lol

There are a lot of cute tricks you need to learn as you get into higher level of play like creep pull, creep block all which don’t exist in League.
