if you look for different AIs look in the workshop for it, there are some cheat ais
(that are stronger that the old conqueror ai), on reddit i saw this last days someone postet a other ai i do not found in the workshop, ill look for the link.
but the ai from Promiskuitiv is also strong and does not cheat afaik, or maybe just on hardest – i dont remember, but its also a good challenge on hardest difficult, when you compare the old ai and the new one from promiskuitiv, you will se a gigantic difference, also about tactics.

This AI is made by the scripter of “The Horde” (Archon) and “Promi” (me). Both of our AIs are in the mod version release (though as you know these AIs are incompatible with the steam release since they are only compatible with the userpatch).
In terms of raw strength (although you can’t test it here) they would probably be slightly stronger than the new standard AI (due to differences in the scripting engine), but in return it’s much more optimized for a good experience for all kinds of players (not just for the stronger ones etc).
The new standard AI is also way stronger than the old standard AI and actually uses viable strategies and executes them very well for an AI. As of now i didn’t see a stronger non-cheating custom AI for HD, but just as gagman said there are some cheating ones. In addition to that the AI wasn’t only made to be strong but also to be able to play as many maps as well as possible (same for the population caps / difficulty levels / game modes / etc).
Also it will never cheat by default!
For players who want even more of a challenge i added an option to make the AI cheat. Just taunt the AIs you want to cheat the number “200” while playing on the “hardest” level (tick these boxes for enemy AIs before sending the message, else they won’t be able to read it even if you use the “*” chat: http://i. imgur. com/2zLoITt. png).
tl’dr: Just to answer your question: There isn’t a major difference.
Thanks for clearing that up. I loved testing my skills against hard mode hord or barbarian in the patched release so given what you said, I might make the transition to steam which should give me better options as well. As for a final question, as you probably know, the AI in the patched release couldn’t really do water maps. They would swarm with boats but that was it. Has this been fixed/worked on in the offical expansion version? Also, did the Forgotten Empires patch AI cheat even on hard mode? Sorry about all these questions but having the opportunity to ask one of the people who actually worked on the project is too good to pass up. I love the work you guys put into it.
*As for one final question, as someone who was not in the loop for the transition from the Forgotten Empires patch to the Forgotten expansion, why was there an incompatibility issue with porting the AI mods over to steam?
The AIs on the mod version of FE only cheats on the hardest difficulty level and is handicapped on medium difficulty or lower.
The AI on the HD version of the game never cheats and is handicapped on hard difficulty or lower. You can activate optional cheats by doing what i wrote in my post above though.
About the watermaps: It’s tough for AIs to detect what the map looks like and thus it may not always be the perfect distribution of land/water units but it works decent overall imo.
The reason is that the mod version of FE utilizes the userpatch v1.2 (although the most recent userpatch version would be 1.4) – as the change of the game version number implies its not compatible with older (official) versions of the game anymore. My assumption (don’t know even know for sure which exact version it is) is that the HD game is based on the latest official version of the game. The HD team then made lots of improvements to that and many of those were also ones which the userpatch made, but it’s still not “similar enough” to be compatible. Most of the AIs that the mod version of FE uses are – only – compatible with the userpatch and thus don’t work on HD.
